The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and conducting policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues on the continent.
IT Support Officer
- Location. Nairobi
Duties/Responsibilities
S/he will be responsible for the day-to-day support of all IT systems, business systems, office systems, computer networks, and telephony systems throughout the APHRC complex- the Campus and Ulwazi Place. The IT Support Officer will:
- Ensure tidiness of all data and networking equipment and server room at the hotel (Ulwazi Place).
- Consolidate and advise the ICT Manager on the ICT needs and requirements at the hotel.
- Ensure firewall implementation and management, servers, workstations and network infrastructure configuration, networking equipment; wireless AP and switches, domain controller and Active Directory management, PABX management: 3CX, VPN configuration and email accounts management.
- Ensure smooth functioning and co-ordination of vendors for guest Internet, conferencing, Property Management Systems – eZee, Point of Sale – POS, IPTV, Telephony systems and other software vendors.
- Set-up, configure and deploy hardware and software.
- Prepare & implement preventive maintenance schedule for all IT hardware & software.
- Manage disaster recovery process and ensure regular daily backup is taken.
- Set up antivirus and provide day to day support.
- Ensure that policies and procedures relating to PCI compliance are updated.
- Maintain a system error / progress log book and address reported problems.
- Ensure IT Audit points are implemented as per relevant Standard Operating Procedures.
- Monitor and maintain proper inventory of hardware and software licenses.
- Be familiar with ICT Policies and ensure their implementation through regular staff awareness and training sessions.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or equivalent.
- At least 3 years relevant experience.
- Must be a self-starter, alert, energetic, responsible and flexible.
- Advanced knowledge of networking fundamentals, general network setup and device configuration.
- Knowledge of Linux and Windows Servers implementation and configuration.
- Demonstrated ability to support Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS users’ workstations.
- High level of confidentiality due to the kind of information that is interacted with on a daily basis.

Finance intern
- Location. Nairobi
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support the Payables Accountant in ensuring efficient, timely and accurate recording and payment processing in Microsoft Dynamics.
- Assist in developing and maintaining an effective filing, archiving and record keeping system- both paper and electronic.
- Assist in bank reconciliation and verification of the vendor balances in the system.
- Assist in the organization and preparation of biweekly meetings which includes preparation of biweekly reports and taking of minutes.
- Assist in supporting annual audits by retrieving the sampled documents.
- Assist in ensuring proper documentation of payment vouchers and all other supporting documents.
- Assist in the thorough review and verification of all transactions at point of entry by ensuring appropriate purchase order matching, credit terms and adherence to appropriate authorization and budget confirmation and clearance.
- Support in the effective running of daily financial activities of APHRC.
Qualifications, experience and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field; should have graduated in the last six (6) months.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Post-doctoral Research Scientist
- Location. Nairobi
Duties/Responsibilities
- Working with the project team to ensure the successful implementation of the Kenya Abortion Survey;
- and other assigned projects;
- Coordinate the Kenya Abortion Survey project activities, including planning and supporting training, data collection, analysis, and reporting;
- Oversee/lead the development of field and training manuals;
- Oversee the review and translation of research tools;
- Oversee fieldwork of the proposed research project to ensure the timely implementation of field activities;
- Support proposal writing and other fundraising activities within the Unit;
- Ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained;
- Oversee data cleaning and analysis;
- Lead the development of project reports;
- Participate in the dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with appropriate audiences;
- Monitor project budgets and expenditure;
- Prepare project progress reports; and
- Lead and contribute to the development of manuscripts on abortion from this study and other topics within APHRC.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- PhD in Public Health, Community Health, or any related field with a specialization/focus on sexual, reproductive, maternal, and adolescent health and abortion research in Africa.
- At least one year of post-doctoral research experience conducting research on sexual and reproductive health, especially on abortion, in Africa.
- Demonstrated experience in managing research projects.
- Skills in quantitative and qualitative methods, including experience in data analysis with familiarity in Stata.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work independently in a team.
- Extensive experience and expertise working in abortion research (both quantitative and qualitative) and abortion policy in Africa.
- At least four years working and engaging with stakeholders on the topic of abortion, and with knowledge of the post-abortion care landscape.
- Demonstrable ability to write and publish scientific papers based on one’s publication history on sexual and reproductive health and/or abortion
