BBC Monitoring is a division of the British Broadcasting Corporation which monitors, and reports on, mass media worldwide. Based at Caversham Park in Caversham, Reading in southern England, it has a number of overseas bureaux including Moscow, Nairobi, Kiev, Baku, Tashkent, Cairo, Tbilisi, Yerevan, and Delhi. A signals-receiving station for BBC Monitoring is at Crowsley Park in South Oxfordshire, close to Caversham Park. BBC Monitoring selects and translates information from radio, television, press, news agencies and the Internet from 150 countries in more than 70 languages. Reporting produced by the service is used as open-source intelligence by elements of the British Government and commercial customers.

Role Responsibility

As a Digital Journalist, you’ll play a pivotal role in meeting the needs of BBC Monitoring’s users by identifying news and key insights from TV, radio, newspapers and social media across Africa.  You will produce engaging content in English on a range of different platforms. You will work within a shift pattern, which may also be dictated by events as they happen.

You’ll use a variety of tools and techniques to mine the media for story ideas, identify emerging trends and narratives and contribute to advance planning for coverage of key events.

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll have experience as a journalist, excellent writing skills and be able to identify material that makes a “high impact” story of interest to BBC Monitoring’s customers. You have a thorough understanding of the media environment of Africa and good knowledge of political, cultural, religious and economic factors significant in the region.

You are willing and able to embrace new ways of working and new technology, and are constantly looking for ways to innovate.

You’ll need complete fluency in one (or more) of the following languages: Swahili, Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, Oromo, French, Arabic, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Kinyrwanda/Kirundi and/or any other language dominant in Africa’s media scene.

Role Responsibility

This role requires a combination of regional knowledge, newswriting and research skills, and is pivotal to ensuring that BBC Monitoring creates products that deliver high value to users. On a day-to-day basis, you will contribute to BBC Monitoring’s coverage of Africa by monitoring vernacular and other media for news developments.

You will prepare background information and create products in a range of formats in collaboration with other BBCM journalists. You will also be involved in integrating video, images, graphics and data into BBCM’s output.

You will be responsible for maintaining an up-to-date database of personalities, organisations and source information on Africa, using the best technology for gathering and surfacing reliable information.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have an excellent knowledge of one (or more) of the following languages: Swahili, Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, Oromo, French, Arabic, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Kinyrwanda/Kirundi and/or any other language dominant in Africa’s media scene.  An interest in international news and media developments is essential.

You must be a good communicator and team-worker, with strong interpersonal skills. You are someone who is good with detail and has the ability to spot a story. Reporting to the Editorial Lead, you will also be expected to work closely with BBC colleagues in other editorial departments.

Willingness and enthusiasm to embrace new ways of working and new technology to analyse information and produce content is essential.
